Review: Their Eyes Are Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Sadly, I could only give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️. It just didn’t do anything for me. I think between hearing people rave about this book and my expectations be high and the fact that I JUST finished reading The Warmth of Other Suns/The Wedding Date, I was expecting more. I enjoyed the story as best I could, but not enough to rate it any higher.
Another thing that trips me out is people saying that Janie and Tea Cake are one of their favorite black couples from a novel. HELLO??? Are we reading the same book here? Janie had some of the most dysfunctional relationships I’ve ever seen. The only one not being dysfunctional, she left in the dust. I literally just gave her second two relationships blank stares because I couldn’t understand this idea of love and acceptance from others of the abuse Janie endured throughout these two relationships.
Although this book was average for me, it did have it’s good parts and I’m glad to have knocked a black classic off my list. I loved how the characters spoke and how full of life they were. Had I read this at a different time, it might have been better for me. I didn’t hat it, it was just ok.
