Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Such a cute story! It took me a little to get into but as Eleanor and other characters developed, I became intrigued.

Eleanor is a troubled 30 year old young woman and is dealing with many issues. Because she doesn’t have any friends, she carries the weight of all of her troubles which leads to binge drinking, depression and suicide attempts. While this isn’t the prettiest of stories, it’s a great one that sheds light on mental illness and how people may or may not cope with it.

I loved the character Raymond who ended up being Eleanor’s savior. She accidentally made a friend in him and he ended up being someone who cared for her and someone she could depend on. Would have loved to see their relationship develop further but baby steps were needed.

The novel ends with Eleanor taking a stand to the toxicity in her life (mainly her mother) and finally becoming her own person. After being rescued by Raymond after a suicide attempt, Eleanor begins to better herself by going to therapy and taking a stand with the people around her.

Cute and engaging. A 4 star rating from me.
