Review: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

I remember reading this book as a kid (many, many, years ago) and how when I read it, it had such a great impact on me and how it left me feeling after I read it. I’d been wanting to reread this book as an adult for some time now and got the opportunity to do so these past couple of weeks for an upcoming podcast appearance I will be making.

This book did not disappoint the second time around. Going into it, I vaguely remembered details of the story line but this refresher brought it all back. Anger, sadness and happiness were felt all throughout this book.

My favorite characters were Cassie, Stacey and Uncle Hammer. I loved the strength of Cassie, the determination and protective instincts of Stacey and how loving and giving Uncle Hammer was when it came to his family. I absolutely hated TJ Avery. A part of me was conflicted at the end of the book. I wanted to sympathize with TJ Avery but at the same time see him get served the karma he deserved. The entire Logan family also held a special place in my heart. They each brought something unique to the table when it came to loving one another.

I rated this book 5 stars. The story sheds light on many controversial issues during the 1930s and many in which are still relevant today (unfortunately). Definitely one I will be setting aside for my little ones to read in the next few years.
